Recommended Websites How Car Clutches Work A clutch is an automotive part most of us are probably not aware of how it exactly works. Well, let's just say that the clutch is a driving mechanism that makes a car run faster and slower. By understanding how an engine works and identifying its components, you will be able to understand how a car clutch functions. If you start a car, you will notice that the engine is already spinning although the engine is connected to the wheels. The thing that is connected to the engine is called the drive shaft. When you press the gas pedal, the engine spins faster. When the engine goes faster, the drive shaft goes faster, as well as the wheel since its connected to the drive shaft. This is where the clutch comes out. It engages the drive shaft in order for the car to run. When you engage the clutch, it locks the engine to the transmission input shaft with the help of springs causing them to spin at the similar speed. These springs help to isolate the transmission from the shock of the clutch engaging. These clutches can engage and disengage various sets of gears, which make the car go faster and slower. Just imagine a car without a clutch...that would be a major disaster! Clutches vary depending on the transmissions of your car. If you are going to drive a manual transmission, it has more than one clutch. You are the one in control of when it comes to manual transmission. When you step on the clutch to shift gears, you are changing the speed of the engine and the tires. There’s an extra pedal known as a clutch pedal, which is located on the left of the brake pedal.
