Car Fuel Pump Types & functions

All car engines burn fuel in order to run. But before that happens, fuel needs to go through a combustion chamber before it burns. The component responsible for this engine process is the fuel pump. The reason why the fuel needs to be pumped is because the fuel tank is located on the opposite side of the vehicle.

So how does a car fuel pump functions? Basically, the main job of the fuel pump is to draw the gas towards the engine. It channels the fuel from the tank through the fuel lines and into the engine. Car fuel pump is like the "heart of the engine, whereas the fuel acts as the "blood." When fuel is not getting to where it needs to be, the fuel pump might have a problem.

There are two basic types of car fuel pump, namely the "mechanical fuel pump" and the "electronic fuel pump."

The mechanical fuel pump can be seen mostly in older cars and it is run by the carburetor and mounted right next to it. It is a form of a vacuum that delivers the fuel to the engine.

On the other hand, the electronic fuel pump or fuel injection is found in cars today. As compared to mechanical pumps, electronic fuel injection systems run more effectively because of the higher fuel pressures. The fuel pump is controlled by a computer system and is usually located on the inside or next to the fuel tank.
